First edition of the catalog for this major exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, offering an overview of contemporary European art in the mid-1950s. The twenty-two artists featured include, notably, Afro, Karel Appel, Kenneth Armitage, Francis Bacon, Jean Bazaine, Alberto Burri, Reg Butler, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Lynn Chadwick, Jean Dubuffet, Étienne Hajdu, Alfred Manessier, Luciano Minguzzi, Mirko, Édouard Pignon, Germaine Richier, William Scott, Pierre Soulages, Hans Uhlmann, Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, Werner and Fritz Winter. Each artist is accompanied by reproductions and, of particular interest, statements by the artist. An important publication on the American reception of the postwar European avant-garde, featuring notably Francis Bacon, Dubuffet, Soulages, and Vieira da Silva. Dust jacket is faded, discolored, and stained, with wear and minor damage to the edges; the book itself is in good condition.
