SADOUL (Georges). Jacques Callot: A Mirror of His Time. - Lot 264
SADOUL (Georges). Jacques Callot: A Mirror of His Time. Paris: Gallimard, n.d. Large quarto, publisher’s cardboard binding with an illustrated dust jacket. An important study by Georges Sadoul devoted to Jacques Callot (1592–1635), viewed both as an engraver and as a privileged witness to European society in the early 17th century. The book traces his training in Nancy and Rome, his time in Italy, and his career in Lorraine, placing his major compositions within their historical and social context. It features extensive illustrations reproducing Callot’s principal series—military scenes, landscapes, festivals, figures of the common people, and fantastical compositions—with numerous full-page and double-page details. A particularly rich resource for the study of Callot’s iconography and that of his era. Dust jacket is worn, yellowed, and stained, with wear and minor damage to the flaps and corners; interior is in good condition.
