ORLIAC (Antoine). Veronese. - Lot 234
ORLIAC (Antoine). Veronese. Paris, Éditions Hypérion, n.d. [circa 1940]. Large quarto, cream-colored publisher’s cardboard binding, with the title “Veronese” in red on the front cover. A monograph by Antoine Orliac devoted to Paolo Caliari, known as Veronese (1528–1588), one of the great masters of 16th-century Venetian painting. The book examines Veronese’s training and artistic development, his penchant for large-scale decorative compositions, light, and color, as well as his place within the Venetian pictorial tradition. It is richly illustrated with black-and-white reproductions and color plates mounted on the pages, including *The Baptism of Christ* from the Pitti Gallery in Florence and *Young Woman* from the Louvre Museum. Several drawings are also reproduced, including a study of *The Wedding* held at the British Museum. A publication characteristic of the major art monographs published by Éditions Hypérion, with particular attention paid to its iconographic presentation. This copy is very heavily affected by moisture: significant water stains and streaks on both covers, discoloration and surface damage to the cardboard binding, particularly pronounced at the top and along the margins; traces of moisture are also visible on some pages. Nevertheless, the interior is still usable, and the illustrations are generally well-preserved.
