OPPÉ (A. P.). Sandro Botticelli. - Lot 233
OPPÉ (A. P.). Sandro Botticelli. Paris, Librairie Hachette et Cie, 1913. In-4, publisher’s blue-green percaline cloth binding, gilt borders and decorations on the front cover and spine, gilt title. A monograph devoted to Sandro Botticelli, illustrated with 25 color plates printed separately from the text. A. P. Oppé examines, in turn, the Florentine painter’s secular and mythological worlds, his religious work, and his major compositions, with detailed entries on each painting. A beautiful early 20th-century publication, notable for its color reproductions, including a plate placed opposite the title page. The work reflects the critical rediscovery of Botticelli and the considerable enthusiasm his work generated at that time. Percaline cloth binding, scuffed at the headband and corners; a few marks on the covers. Fairly heavy foxing, mainly in the margins and on some pages; plates retain their beautiful colors.
