LÉVÊQUE (Jean-Jacques). Piranesi. - Lot 187
LÉVÊQUE (Jean-Jacques). Piranesi. Paris, Éditions Siloé, n.d. Large quarto, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. A beautiful monograph devoted to Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720–1778), a Venetian architect, draftsman, and engraver. Jean-Jacques Lévêque traces his career and examines his major series of engravings, his visionary interpretation of ancient architecture, and his influence on the European architectural imagination. Extensive illustrations reproducing the famous views of Rome, ancient monuments and ruins, the *Vedute*, as well as the spectacular *Carceri d’invenzione* (Imaginary Prisons). Numerous full-page and double-page reproductions, including views of the Temple of Neptune at Paestum and the burial chamber at Vigna Casale. A beautiful copy in its dust jacket, with a few slight signs of wear.
