KLINGENDER (F. D.), ed., *Hogarth and English Caricature*. - Lot 160
KLINGENDER (F. D.), ed., *Hogarth and English Caricature*. London–New York: Transatlantic Arts Ltd, [1944]. 4to, publisher’s cardboard binding with illustrated dust jacket. A volume devoted to William Hogarth and the development of English caricature in the 18th and early 19th centuries, edited by Francis Donald Klingender. The study situates Hogarth within the history of British graphic satire and examines his influence on subsequent generations. It devotes considerable attention to the great English caricaturists, notably James Gillray, Thomas Rowlandson, and their contemporaries, as well as to the political and social caricature of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic eras. Numerous black-and-white and color reproductions, several of which are full-page, including Gillray’s *The National Assembly Petrified* (1791), Newton’s *A Night Mare* (1794), and various Franco-English satires. Dust jacket preserved, but faded, with tears, small losses, and wear on the corners and edges; binding and interior in generally good condition.
