HERCULES SEGHERS - Lot 139
HERCULES SEGHERS BONNIER (Henry). The World of Hercules Seghers. Paris, Henri Scrépel, “Les Carnets de Dessins” series, [circa 1980]. Large square quarto, publisher’s cardboard binding with illustrated dust jacket. Numerous full-page reproductions. A particularly interesting volume in the “Les Carnets de Dessins” series, devoted to Hercules Seghers (c. 1589/90–1633/38), a Dutch painter and engraver whose fantastical landscapes and technical experiments exerted a profound influence on Rembrandt, among others. Henry Bonnier explores this world of mountainous landscapes, rocky valleys, and imaginary architecture, in which Seghers developed a profoundly original vision. The illustrations particularly highlight his drawings and his famous graphic experiments. A subject that is significantly less common than the volumes in the collection devoted to the great masters. A good copy, with a slightly rubbed dust jacket.
