CLAUDE LORRAIN - Lot 66
CLAUDE LORRAIN COTTÉ (Sabine). The World of Claude Lorrain. Paris, Henri Scrépel, “Les Carnets de Dessins” series, [circa 1980]. Large square quarto, publisher’s cardboard binding with illustrated dust jacket. Numerous reproductions of drawings in black and sepia. A volume devoted to the graphic work of Claude Gellée, known as Claude Lorrain, part of the “Les Carnets de Dessins” series, established and edited by Henri Scrépel under the auspices of the Cabinet de Dessin. Sabine Cotté presents Claude Lorrain’s landscape drawings, executed in pen, black chalk, and wash, in which direct observation of nature is combined with the construction of the ideal landscape. Includes a reproduction of a *View of a Park*, circa 1650, in black chalk and bistre wash, held by the British Museum. A beautiful collection of illustrations that allows one to appreciate the freedom and modernity of Claude Lorrain’s drawing style. A good copy; a few minor flaws and stains on the dust jacket.
