BRONSTEIN (Leo). El Greco (Domenicos Theotocopoulos). - Lot 53
BRONSTEIN (Leo). El Greco (Domenicos Theotocopoulos). Paris, Éditions Cercle d'Art, “La Bibliothèque des Grands Peintres,” [20th century]. Large quarto, publisher’s cardboard binding with illustrated dust jacket and protective Rhodoid sleeve. A major monograph on Domínikos Theotokópoulos, known as El Greco (1541–1614), by Léo Bronstein, professor of art history at Brandeis University. The book traces the painter’s career from his Cretan origins and his training in the Byzantine tradition through his time in Italy and his eventual settlement in Spain. The study is accompanied by extensive illustrations featuring religious paintings, portraits, and large-scale compositions, including numerous full-page color plates. Among the works reproduced is notably *The Assumption of the Virgin* from 1577, now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. Dust jacket and Rhodoid cover show some scuffing, small tears, and signs of wear; interior is in good condition.
