BOULEAU (Charles) — Frameworks: The Secret Geometry of Paint - Lot 43
BOULEAU (Charles) — Frameworks: The Secret Geometry of Painters Paris, Éditions du Seuil, n.d. [20th century]. Preface by Jacques Villon. Substantial in-4 volume, publisher’s binding in black cloth, with the title and geometric design in silver on the front cover. A major study by Charles Bouleau devoted to the geometric structures underlying pictorial composition. The author analyzes the “structures” employed by artists, from the Renaissance to modern art: diagonals, folds, squares, rectangles, grids, and proportions. Extensive black-and-white illustrations, with numerous reproductions of works on which the studied geometric lines are overlaid. Notable artists discussed include Tintoretto, Velázquez, Degas, Daumier, the Old Masters, Japanese prints, and modern art. This book has become a classic for the study of composition and geometry in painting. The binding shows some slight scuffing and signs of wear; the interior appears to be in good condition. The copy shown does not include a dust jacket.
