THE CONTRAST — TO DIE FOR ONE'S COUNTRY - Lot 198
THE CONTRAST — TO DIE FOR ONE'S COUNTRY VERNIER (Charles). THE CONTRAST. To Die for One's Country: To Do It — To Sing of It. Paris, Lith. Formstecher frères, Faubourg Saint-Martin, 122, [1870–1871]. Colored lithograph. On the left, a French soldier fights amid the dead and wounded; on the right, a figure in uniform strikes a theatrical pose, saber in hand. The caption contrasts, with biting irony, those who truly make the patriotic sacrifice with those who are content merely to sing of it. Condition: yellowed paper; foxing, soiling, creases, and small marginal tears; old annotations.
