Parade of the Teutons and Our Clocks - Lot 95
Parade of the Teutons and Our Clocks COINDRÉ (Y.). — PARADE OF THE TEUTONS AND OUR CLOCKS. Paris, Lith. Laillot, 22 Rue Sainte-Anne, [1870–1871]. Large, colored political caricature, numbered 14, depicting a German soldier laden with an implausible haul—clocks, household items, and various belongings—facing a female figure draped in red. A caption in a speech bubble explicitly alludes to “trinkets in Prussia” and the war. The composition is part of the abundant French satirical output that emerged from the Franco-Prussian War, in which the theme of looting and clocks carried off by Prussian soldiers became a veritable iconographic cliché. Colored lithograph. Signed “Y. Coindré” in the stone. Significant tear with a small loss in the lower margin, creases, some foxing, and signs of wear.
