POLITICAL CARTOON — SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN? - Lot 79
POLITICAL CARTOON — SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN? VERNIER (Charles). SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN?... NEITHER ONE NOR THE OTHER. Paris, A. Mordret, printer-publisher, 8 rue Poulet, [1871], No. 18. Colored lithograph. In the center, a young woman wearing a Phrygian cap—the personification of the French Republic—sits on a pedestal bearing the letters RF. Two disfigured figures present her, respectively, with a ball marked “BLANC” and another marked “ROUGE .” The caption’s response—“Neither one nor the other”—conveys the symbolic rejection of the two political extremes presented to the young Republic. Condition: generally good condition; paper slightly yellowed, a few foxing spots, and minor wear along the edges.
