“THE WINTER OF 1870–1871 IN WILHELMSHÖHE” - Lot 10
“THE WINTER OF 1870–1871 IN WILHELMSHÖHE” ANONYMOUS. The Winter of 1870–1871 in Wilhelmshöhe. Napoleonic Amusements. Brussels, Ch. Sacré-Duquesne, publisher, [1870–1871]. Large satirical black-and-white lithograph depicting several figures from the imperial regime engaged in a burlesque scene of pulling a sled through the snow. Caption: “Pull hard, Lebœuf… Push and hold on tight, Cassagnac… Come on, pull, Bazaine… Careful, Louis, don’t hurt yourself… ” The scene notably brings together figures associated with the Second Empire and the War of 1870, centered on Napoleon III’s exile to Wilhelmshöhe, where the deposed emperor was held after Sedan. Brussels edition by Ch. Sacré-Duquesne. Large sheet that has been folded; significant tears and damage to the margins, particularly on the left and at the top, central creases, browned paper, and small foxing spots. Fair condition, but a particularly interesting composition.
