In-8, VII-262 pp., paperback, embossed cover printed in red and black, untrimmed. A beautiful edition illustrated with 33 original woodcuts by Gaston Pastré, including the frontispiece, several of which are printed in two tones. This edition is the first volume in Henri Jonquières’ “Les Beaux Romans” series. Limited edition of 1,180 copies, including 50 on Imperial Japanese paper, 30 on Van Gelder Holland paper, and 1,100 on Rives vellum. This is one of the copies on Rives vellum, no. 634. One of Barbey d’Aurevilly’s great Norman novels, *L’Ensorcelée* is set against the backdrop of the Chouannerie and the mysterious landscapes of the Cotentin Peninsula. Pastré’s highly stylized illustration, with its strong contrasts of black and color, complements the text’s dark and fantastical atmosphere particularly well. A beautiful paperback copy, with full margins, preserved in its original illustrated cover. The cover is slightly browned and faded, with a few minor signs of wear and slight scuffing on the top and bottom edges and the corners; the interior is clean.
