SEBAG (Paul) — Kairouan. An Intimate Glimpse of the Ceremony - Lot 278
SEBAG (Paul) — Kairouan. An Intimate Glimpse of the Ceremony SEBAG (Paul). — Kairouan. The Great Mosque. Photographs by André Martin. Zurich: Delpire Éditeur, 1963. Square quarto, publisher’s illustrated hardcover with typographic dust jacket, 126 pp., numerous black-and-white and color photographs. First edition, second volume of the “Le Génie du lieu” collection published by Robert Delpire. A beautiful volume devoted to the Great Mosque of Kairouan, in which Paul Sebag’s historical and architectural text complements André Martin’s remarkable photographs. The particularly inventive layout alternates between typographic compositions, architectural details, and spectacular full-page or double-page photographs: doors, latticework, geometric motifs, and stone sculptures convey the building’s monumental and austere character with great visual impact. The book opens with a quote from Guy de Maupassant about Kairouan. A fine example of the high graphic and photographic standards of the books published by Robert Delpire in the 1960s. Dust jacket slightly worn, with some stains, scuffs, and small tears; hardcover and interior in good condition.
