LEENHARDT (Maurice). — Arts of Oceania. Paris, Les Éditions du Chêne, “Arts du Monde” series, 1947. In-8, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. 150 pp., abundant black-and-white photographic illustrations and several color plates. Photographs taken by Emmanuel Sougez at the Musée de l’Homme. Series edited by Georges de Miré. The bibliographic references clearly confirm the 1947 first edition and 150 pages. First edition. An interesting overview by Maurice Leenhardt on the traditional arts of Oceania, covering Australia, New Guinea, Melanesia, and Polynesia in particular. The book is particularly rich in reproductions of masks, sculptures, weapons, and ritual objects; a contemporary review mentions 130 photographs by Emmanuel Sougez. Condition: Interior in fair condition with some foxing and signs of wear. Hardcover intact. Original dust jacket present but heavily worn, scuffed, with tears and significant losses on the back cover, particularly at the top and bottom corners.
