LE JARDIN DES ARTS — No. 6 — April 1955 - Lot 200
LE JARDIN DES ARTS — No. 6 — April 1955 LE JARDIN DES ARTS. Monthly magazine. No. 6, April 1955. Paris, Éditions Tallandier, 17 rue Rémy-Dumoncel, 1955. In-4, paperback, color-illustrated cover depicting a deity from Nepal or Tibet, numerous black-and-white photographs and reproductions. 200 francs. The sixth issue of this important art magazine edited by René Wittmann, published in April 1955. A particularly varied table of contents, including notably: Pierre de Nolhac, Madame Vigée-Le Brun, Painter to Marie-Antoinette; Ernest de Ganay, Gardens of the Côte d’Azur; Léon Treich, On Gardening…; Madeleine Hours, “Rediscovering Painting Through X-Rays…”; Yvan Christ, “A Masterpiece of Merovingian Art: The Crypts of Jouarre Abbey”; Odette Monod, Sacred Paintings: Deities of Nepal and Tibet; Our Ancestors: The Gauls…; René Jeanne, An Ancestor of Image Hunters: Gustave Doré; André Salmon, Remembering Le Douanier. The cover features a Dakini—a deity endowed with supernatural powers—a gilded hammered bronze statue from Nepalese-Tibetan workshops, related to Odette Monod’s study. Notable Content The issue opens with Pierre de Nolhac’s study devoted to Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun and Marie-Antoinette, illustrated with a portrait of Marie-Antoinette “en gaule,” exhibited at the 1783 Salon. Ernest de Ganay’s article on the Gardens of the French Riviera is another highlight of the issue, featuring, in particular, a large photograph of La Croix des Gardes in Cannes, a work by architect Godard created in 1925. This issue thus brings together several sought-after topics: the 18th century and Marie-Antoinette, the history of gardens, Merovingian art, Asian and Nepalese-Tibetan art, Gustave Doré, and Douanier Rousseau. A fine copy. The cover is well-preserved, with some rubbing and minor signs of wear; a few small tears and superficial losses along the left edge of the front cover, and the corners and edges are slightly rubbed. The back cover is slightly soiled with some foxing. The interior is fresh and well-preserved, with sound stitching. The full-color cover remains very presentable and is the main visual attraction of this copy.
