LE JARDIN DES ARTS — No. 16 — February 1956 - Lot 198
LE JARDIN DES ARTS — No. 16 — February 1956 LE JARDIN DES ARTS. — No. 16, February 1956. Paris: Éditions Tallandier, 1956. Quarto, paperback, color-illustrated cover based on Gustave Courbet’s *The Wheat Field* (National Gallery), numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions and illustrations, a few color illustrations. Original price: 200 F. Issue No. 16 of the monthly magazine *Le Jardin des Arts*, edited by René Wittmann. A substantial issue bringing together several studies devoted to painting, photography, the decorative arts, and art criticism. Highlights include: François Fosca, “Mountain Painters”; Yvan Christ, “The Lycée Henri-IV, the Former Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève”; a major photographic feature, “An Exhibition of 500 Photographs: ‘The Great Family of Mankind’”; René Huyghe, “Courbet, ‘The Painter’s Studio’”; Yvonne Brunhammer and Monique Ricour, “Interior Decoration in the First Half of the 18th Century”; M. Jardel, “Philippe de La Salle, Magician of Color and Silk”; Paul Jamot, “Nature as Seen by English Painters”; Madeleine Fuchs, “Partitions at Will”; and Maurice Toesca, “Two Books Illustrated by Georges Braque.” An interesting issue for the history of photography One of the particular highlights of this issue is its article devoted to the exhibition “La grande famille des hommes,” the French version of the famous international photography exhibition *The Family of Man*. The article is illustrated with photographs reproduced in full-page or large-page spreads, notably images attributed to Herbert List, Margaret Bourke-White, and Ronny Jaques. This collection constitutes an interesting contemporary account of the French reception of humanist photography in the 1950s. Courbet—The Painter’s Studio Another notable contribution is the study by René Huyghe, then a professor at the Collège de France, devoted to Gustave Courbet and *The Painter’s Studio*. The article, richly illustrated with details of the famous composition, analyzes the various figures, the composition of the work, and its symbolic dimension. Several reproductions show, in particular, the portrait of the artist, the little boy, the hunters, the reaper, and various other figures in the painting. The cover also features a reproduction of Courbet’s *Le Champ de blé*. Decorative Arts—Philippe de La Salle This issue also includes a study on Philippe de La Salle, a Lyon-based designer and silk manufacturer, accompanied by an interesting color advertisement for Victor Coates upholstery fabrics: Philodendrons chintz and Le Petit Caporal, Vallauris, and Be-Bop printed reps. This page is now of particular documentary interest for the history of textiles and design in the 1950s. Used condition. Copy is quite worn on the outside. Cover is scuffed, scratched, and marked, with wear along the edges and corners. Spine is heavily worn, with significant paper loss at the top and visible delamination/cracking along the hinge of the front cover. Corners are rounded, and there are small peripheral tears. The interior is in significantly better condition, with slightly yellowed paper and some signs of wear; the sections and illustrations appear generally well-preserved.
