INDIA — ART HISTORY — GROUSSET - Lot 167
INDIA — ART HISTORY — GROUSSET GROUSSET (René). — The Civilizations of the East. Volume II: India. Paris, Les Éditions G. Crès & Cie, 1930. Large 8vo, paperback; cover lined with cream paper, printed in black and red and bearing the publisher’s mark; 370 pp.; untrimmed; abundantly illustrated with 246 black-and-white photographs and documentary images, both within the text and as full-page plates. First edition of this second volume of René Grousset’s comprehensive work, *The Civilizations of the East*, published in four volumes between 1929 and 1930: *The East*, *India*, *China*, and *Japan*. Grousset conceived the series as a general introduction to the study of Asian arts, placing art history within its historical, religious, and literary context. This volume is entirely devoted to the civilizations of India. In it, Grousset successively examines Buddhist and Brahmanic India, the “outer” regions of India, and Muslim India, tracing the development of its religions, architecture, and arts. The work covers, in particular, the Maurya period, the schools of Bhârhut and Sânchî, Greco-Buddhist art, the Gupta dynasties, the great Hindu shrines, as well as the spread of Indian art throughout Southeast Asia. The book features a wealth of illustrations, providing extensive documentation on Indian sculpture and architecture: stupas, temples, cave shrines, Buddhist and Brahmanic statuary, reliefs, and monuments. Several reproductions come from the archives and collections of the Guimet Museum. René Grousset (1885–1952), a French historian and Orientalist, was one of the leading French figures in the history of Asia in the 20th century. This volume is one of his first major comprehensive works devoted to Asian civilizations and arts. The BnF does list this 1929–1930 Crès edition. Paperback copy, untrimmed, in its original reinforced cover. The cover is slightly faded and pitted, with a few foxing spots and minor signs of wear; there is a faint, old pencil inscription on the back cover. The interior is fairly fresh overall, with a few scattered foxing spots. A fine copy in its original presentation.
