GUERNE (Armel) — DE SOLMS (Élisabeth). Romanesque Virgins. T - Lot 147
GUERNE (Armel) — DE SOLMS (Élisabeth). Romanesque Virgins. The Seated Virgins. GUERNE (Armel) and DE SOLMS (Élisabeth). — Romanesque Virgins. The Seated Virgins. Medieval texts translated by Armel Guerne and Élisabeth de Solms. Photographs by Pierre Belzeaux and Jean Dieuzaide. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, “Les Points cardinaux” series, No. 4, 1961. Large square in-4 format, approximately 26 × 21.5 cm, 204 pp., publisher’s full cloth with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket. First edition. The Zodiaque bibliography confirms that this is the fourth volume of the “Les Points cardinaux” collection; institutional catalogs list 1961 as the publication year and 204 pages. First edition of this remarkable work devoted to Romanesque Virgins in Majesty, and more specifically to seated Virgins. The volume combines a selection of medieval texts, translated by Armel Guerne and Élisabeth de Solms, with extensive photographic documentation by Pierre Belzeaux and Jean Dieuzaide. Extensive photographic illustrations of Romanesque Marian statuary, featuring depictions of the Virgin and Child preserved in churches, museums, and collections, with numerous close-ups of faces and polychrome details. The book includes 79 black-and-white reproductions, along with several color compositions and plates, some of which are full-page. The editorial design, executed with particular care, is characteristic of the early volumes in the “Les Points cardinaux” collection, in which Zodiaque juxtaposed ancient texts, modern photography, and major works of medieval art. A complete copy with its illustrated dust jacket. The interior is fresh and well-preserved. The dust jacket is quite heavily worn, with scuffing, creases, tears, and small losses, particularly at the top and bottom edges, the corners, and along the lower border; a few old repairs are visible. The binding itself appears to be well-preserved.
