EUGÈNE PIOT FOUNDATION. — MONUMENTS AND MEMOIRS published by - Lot 126
EUGÈNE PIOT FOUNDATION. — MONUMENTS AND MEMOIRS published by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Volume Thirty-Seven. Edited by Émile Mâle and Charles Picard, with the assistance of Jean Charbonneaux. Paris, Presses Universitaires de France, 1940. Large 4to, paperback, with the publisher’s printed cover. Numerous illustrations in the text and 11 plates, 2 of which are in color. This volume also marks the transition to publication by Presses Universitaires de France. Contents An important volume in the prestigious archaeological series of the Eugène Piot Foundation, comprising several studies devoted to Egyptian, Sumerian, Greek, Celtic, and medieval antiquities, notably: Charles Picard, Étienne Michon, Director of Monuments and Memoirs (1929–1939); Charles Boreux, Three Egyptian Works from the Atherton Curtis Donation (Louvre Museum); Georges Contenau, An Archaic Sumerian Statuette from the Louvre Museum; Study of an Engraved Archaic Stele from the Louvre Museum; Charles Picard, Three Carved Cinerary Urns from the Condé Museum in Chantilly; Raymond Lantier, Celtic Metal Masks; Jacques Dupont, A Portrait of Artus Gouffier; Paul Deschamps, The Statue of Saint Louis in Mainneville (Eure). This volume is indeed Volume 37 from 1940; Persée and the Louvre collections confirm, in particular, the contributions by Boreux and Picard. Interesting bibliographic detail The review published by the Academy in 1940 indicates that this volume marks the beginning of Charles Picard’s editorship and specifies that, despite the adoption of a slightly less expensive format, the content and illustrations were not reduced. The eleven inserts, including two in color, are specifically noted. A good copy in its original condition. The cover is browned and slightly soiled, with a few old pencil marks and annotations; minor wear to the edges and corners. The interior is clean overall, with slightly yellowed paper. Untrimmed copy, with guard pages and irregular edges, which is rather appealing for this type of publication.
