DIVERSION — No. 43 — Gothic Figures - Lot 103
DIVERSION — No. 43 — Gothic Figures AUBERT (Marcel). — Gothic Figures. Diversion, No. 43. Paris, Laboratoires Longuet, [1930s–1940s]. Quarto, paperback, black-and-white illustrated cover with a turquoise band; numerous black-and-white photographic reproductions; illustrated pharmaceutical advertisements. An issue of the journal *Diversion* devoted to French Gothic sculpture, featuring an essay by Marcel Aubert (1884–1962), a member of the Institut de France, medieval art historian, and specialist in Gothic architecture. Under the title “Gothic Figures,” Aubert examines, in particular, the monumental statuary of the great French cathedrals. The illustrations, which are particularly abundant, reproduce sculptures and ensembles from Reims, Amiens, Chartres, and Strasbourg, among other places: angels, saints, prophets, tympanums, portals, and choir screens. Several photographs are full-page, including an imposing sculpted detail from the south portal of Chartres Cathedral. This copy is particularly interesting due to its physical construction: the photographs show that it retains an illustrated fold-out insert, devoted in particular to the sculptures of Amiens and Strasbourg. This is a detail worth noting in the catalog entry, as this type of removable insert is frequently missing from copies that have been widely circulated. Like the other issues in the series, this volume combines artistic documentation with pharmaceutical advertising. It features remarkable full-page advertising spreads for Citrosodine, Zomine, and Urisanine, designed in a medieval pastiche style perfectly suited to the issue’s theme. Good overall condition. The cover is slightly scuffed and soiled, with minor wear along the edges and at the corners. A few foxing spots or isolated marks inside. The insert is present, with signs of handling and minor marks around the staples and folds. Overall, however, the publication is well-preserved for such a fragile item.
