DIVERSION — No. 31 — Mexico of Yesterday, Mexico of Today - Lot 95
DIVERSION — No. 31 — Mexico of Yesterday, Mexico of Today SOUSTELLE (Jacques). — Mexico of Yesterday, Mexico of Today. Diversion, No. 31. [Paris, Editorial Office, 1937]. In-4, paperback, illustrated cover in black and red, approx. 18 pp., numerous black-and-white photographs in and outside the text. A very interesting issue of *Diversion* devoted to Mexico, with text by Jacques Soustelle and illustrated notably with photographs by Pierre Verger. The front cover depicts the Temple of the Tigers at Chichén Itzá, Yucatán. This photograph is clearly identified as a work by Pierre Verger in an academic study devoted to his trip to Mexico; the study specifically identifies *Diversion*, No. 31, and dates the issue to 1937–1938. Jacques Soustelle’s feature article, titled “Mexico of Yesterday, Mexico of Today,” contrasts pre-Columbian Mexico with that of the 1930s: Chichén Itzá, indigenous traditions, festivals and pilgrimages, landscapes, colonial architecture, and the country’s political and social transformations. The photographs notably depict the Feast of Judas in Mexico City, the Chalma pilgrimage, Oaxaca, Michoacán, and various folk traditions and ceremonies. The photographic content is superior to that of the previous issue: the bibliography of the Pierre Verger Foundation lists 28 photographs by Verger in this issue No. 31 of *Diversion* from 1937. In my opinion, this is the issue’s main selling point, and it must absolutely be highlighted in the entry. Numerous pharmaceutical advertisements characteristic of the magazine, including full-page ads for Urisanine and Quinuryl from Laboratoires Longuet. A good copy. The cover is slightly scuffed and soiled, with a few small marks, creases, and wear on the edges and corners. The spine and stapling show the usual signs of wear. The interior is well-preserved, and the photographs are beautifully crisp.
