DIVERSION — No. 29 — “Sahara” by Joseph Peyré - Lot 93
DIVERSION — No. 29 — “Sahara” by Joseph Peyré DIVERSION. No. 29. — Sahara, by Joseph Peyré. Paris, Laboratoires Longuet, 34 rue Sedaine, [circa 1950]. In-4, stapled, black-and-white photographic cover with purple border, black-and-white photographic illustrations. Pharmaceutical advertisements from Laboratoires Longuet. Issue No. 29 of *Diversion*, an illustrated publication edited by Laboratoires Longuet, combining travel and exploration essays with extensive photographic content and the company’s pharmaceutical advertisements. This issue is devoted to the Sahara, featuring a text by Joseph Peyré, a French writer and novelist best known for several works inspired by Africa and the desert. The feature explores the vast expanses of the Sahara, the trans-Saharan trails, and the caravans, illustrated with heliogravure photographs: Tuaregs, nomads, camel caravans, desert landscapes, oases, and Saharan architecture. The opening spread bears the headline “SAHARA — Joseph Peyré,” accompanied by a particularly evocative photograph depicting a group of nomads with a dromedary. Pharmaceutical Advertisements Like the other issues in this curious series, the magazine combines its cultural content with highly graphic advertising spreads from Laboratoires Longuet. Notable examples include: QUINURYL, presented as a treatment for hyperazotemia, in a full-page photographic spread showing boxes, a bottle, and tablets; URISANINE, “urinary antisepsis,” whose advertisement occupies the entire back cover, featuring a photograph of the bottle and its packaging. Today, these pages lend the publication added significance for the history of pharmaceutical advertising and French graphic design from the 1940s and 1950s. A fine copy. The cover is well-preserved, with some scuffing, minor marks, and creases from use, particularly at the corners and along the edges. A few slight stains or signs of age. The spine and stitching appear to be in good condition. The interior is clean and well-preserved, with a few slight marks or marginal discoloration. The photographs retain beautiful contrast. The Urisanine advertisement on the back cover is particularly fresh and decorative.
