DEMARGNE (Pierre). The Birth of Greek Art. - Lot 91
DEMARGNE (Pierre). The Birth of Greek Art. "L'Univers des Formes" series, created by André Malraux. Paris, N.R.F. - Gallimard, 1964. Substantial in-4 volume, publisher’s full red cloth binding, with a color-illustrated dust jacket, approx. 28 × 22 cm, 449 pp., color frontispiece, very abundant black-and-white and color illustrations, maps and plans, including fold-out maps at the end of the volume. First edition, published in 1964, of the first volume devoted to the Greek World in the prestigious *L'Univers des Formes* series. The contemporary bibliography lists 451 pages, 534 black-and-white and color plates, and 4 separate maps. In this volume, Pierre Demargne examines the development of Greek art from its origins through the flowering of the Archaic period, focusing in particular on the Cycladic, Minoan, and Mycenaean civilizations, the so-called “Dark Ages,” and the earliest manifestations of Greek art proper. This volume constitutes the first part of a four-volume series devoted to the Greek world, complemented by *Archaic Greece*, *Classical Greece*, and *Hellenistic Greece* by Jean Charbonneaux, Roland Martin, and François Villard. The particularly extensive illustrations feature sculptures, terracotta works, ceramics, reliefs, frescoes, archaeological artifacts, and architectural elements. Upon its publication, the book was hailed as the first major French synthesis devoted to the history of Aegean civilization and art from its origins through the Greek Archaic period. A fine copy with a very fresh interior. The publisher’s binding is well-preserved. The original dust jacket is present, which is a plus for this first edition; there is some rubbing and minor marginal tears, particularly on the lower flap and at the corners, with no apparent significant losses. Overall, in very good condition.
