CONTENAU (Georges). — The Art of Ancient Western Asia. - Lot 79
CONTENAU (Georges). — The Art of Ancient Western Asia. Paris and Brussels, Les Éditions G. Van Oest, 1928. Large 8vo, paperback, original printed cover, 58 pp., 1 map, and 64 heliogravure plates. First edition. A major overview by Georges Contenau, then a curator at the Louvre Museum, devoted to the arts of the ancient civilizations of Western Asia: Elam, Sumer, Babylonia, Assyria, Syria, and Asia Minor. The author examines, in particular, architecture, sculpture, glyptics, and the decorative arts, from the earliest Mesopotamian civilizations through to the development of Assyrian art. The book is richly illustrated with 64 plates, featuring reproductions of sculptures, bas-reliefs, and archaeological objects from major collections, notably the famous Gudea of Lagash from the Louvre Museum. A fine copy in its original binding. A few slight signs of wear and small foxing spots on the cover; interior is fresh.
