CONNAISSANCE DU MONDE - Lot 77
CONNAISSANCE DU MONDE Connaissance du Monde. Monthly journal. No. 21 (new series) — August 1960. Paris, Société de Géographie, 1960. Quarto, paperback, with a color photographic cover depicting a traditional Asian boat; numerous black-and-white and color photographs in the text and as inserts. An issue from the new series of this important French journal devoted to travel, exploration, geography, and ethnography. Issue No. 21 from August 1960 is well-documented in institutional collections. Of particular note is Gilbert Houlet’s study, “Itinéraire sénégalais” (pp. 29–39), illustrated with ten photographs. This article is listed in the 1960 bibliography of the *Journal de la Société des Africanistes*. Houlet’s report is one of the highlights of this issue: a portrayal of Senegal through its landscapes, people, and traditional navigation, accompanied by extensive photographic documentation. The issue also preserves its period advertisements, which are of interest today for their graphic design and for the history of travel at the turn of the 1960s: notably a full-page Pan American advertisement promoting its jet service to Bangkok, as well as a beautiful back cover featuring the Parisian Bateaux-Mouches. Copy in used condition. Cover is scuffed and soiled in places, with creases, small tears, and wear on the corners and spine. Visible fold marks on several pages, particularly in the advertising section. Interior, however, appears complete, is well-preserved, and is perfectly legible.
