BON (Antoine) - GAUTHEROT (Marcel) - VERGER (Pierre). — Braz - Lot 56
BON (Antoine) - GAUTHEROT (Marcel) - VERGER (Pierre). — Brazil BON (Antoine), GAUTHEROT (Marcel), and VERGER (Pierre). Brazil. Two hundred seventeen photographs by A. Bon, M. Gautherot, and P. Verger. Introduction by Alceu Amoroso Lima. Notes by Antoine Bon. Paris, Paul Hartmann, publisher, 1950. Large quarto, unpaginated, 217 black-and-white photographs, some full-page, others arranged in collages of multiple images; map of Brazil. Publisher’s hardcover with a photographic dust jacket illustrated on both covers. First edition of this remarkable photographic album devoted to Brazil, bringing together the works of three photographers: Antoine Bon, Marcel Gautherot, and Pierre Verger. The Pierre Verger Foundation lists 1950 as the date of first publication by Paul Hartmann and notes reprints in 1951 and 1957. The 217 photographs offer a sweeping panorama of postwar Brazil: Rio de Janeiro and its urban transformations, ancient and modern architecture, São Paulo, Bahia, Pernambuco, and Recife, landscapes and vegetation, the Amazon, the São Francisco Valley, coffee plantations, agricultural activities, local populations, and scenes of daily life. A review published as early as 1952 specifically highlighted this juxtaposition of colonial towns, modern metropolises, the countryside, the indigenous world, fazendas, and industrialization. The photographic significance is particularly notable due to the collaboration between Marcel Gautherot and Pierre Verger, two figures who are now major figures in documentary photography in Brazil. Research on Gautherot identifies *Brésil* as one of the key publications of his work from the 1940s, blending architecture, landscapes, labor, festivals, and popular culture. The book is thus less a simple travelogue than a true photographic portrait of Brazil at the turn of the 1950s, torn between enduring traditions and rapid modernization. A study specifically devoted to this album also highlights that it brings together views of numerous states as well as series on indigenous peoples, vegetation, the São Francisco River, and the Amazon. This copy is preserved in its original photographic dust jacket, a notable feature of this volume. The interior is in generally good condition. The dust jacket is heavily rubbed and worn, with numerous scratches, creases, small tears, and minor losses along the edges and at the top and bottom; however, the two photographic compositions remain clearly visible.
