BENOIT (François) — Architecture: The Medieval and Modern Ea - Lot 52
BENOIT (François) — Architecture: The Medieval and Modern East BENOIT (François). — Architecture: The Medieval and Modern East. Paris, Librairie Renouard, H. Laurens, 1912. Large 8vo, publisher’s cardboard binding in beige cloth decorated and printed in black and red. First edition. An important textbook devoted to the history of medieval and modern Eastern architecture, by François Benoit, professor of art history at the University of Lille. The author examines, in particular, Christian architecture in Syria and Byzantine architecture, as well as their structural and decorative systems: floor plans, elevations, arches, supports, capitals, domes, cladding, mosaics, and polychromy. Particular emphasis is placed on Hagia Sophia in Constantinople. The book stands out for its exceptional documentation: 145 engravings, 37 maps, and 819 schematic drawings by the author, constituting a vast repertoire of monuments, floor plans, and architectural details. A fine example of the “Art History Manuals” published under the direction of Henry Marcel. The cardboard binding is slightly scuffed and soiled; the caps and corners are worn, particularly at the bottom of the spine; the interior is well-preserved. There is an old handwritten note on the title page.
