BEIGBEDER (Olivier). — FOREZ-VELAY NOVEL. - Lot 50
BEIGBEDER (Olivier). — FOREZ-VELAY NOVEL. BEIGBEDER (Olivier). — Forez-Velay Novel. Unpublished photographs by Zodiaque. German translation by Hilaire de Vos and English translation by Pamela Clarke. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, 1962. Large square 8vo, approximately 290 pp., publisher’s cloth binding, with a color-illustrated photographic dust jacket. “La Nuit des Temps” series, no. 15. Extensive illustrations including 136 heliogravures and 4 color plates, accompanied by maps and plans. First edition. A beautiful monograph devoted to Romanesque architecture and sculpture in the Forez and Velay regions, notably in Le Puy-en-Velay, Saint-Romain-le-Puy, Pommiers-en-Forez, Rozier-Côtes-d’Aurec, and Chamalières. Published in the early years of the famous *La Nuit des Temps* series, the book is particularly remarkable for its extensive photographic documentation: a contemporary review already highlighted the “exceptional quality” of its illustrations and the care taken to showcase the monuments and their sculpted decoration. The full-page and double-page photographs—characteristic of Zodiaque’s early publications—constitute a true visual exploration of regional Romanesque art: architecture, historiated capitals, monumental sculptures, and decorative details. A complete copy with its illustrated dust jacket. The dust jacket shows scuffing, small tears, and wear on the top and bottom edges, along with a few scratches and signs of use; the interior is clean overall, with a few scattered foxing spots visible on the first few pages. A good copy despite the dust jacket’s flaws.
