PRIMITIVE ART — ARTISTS’ COLLECTIONS — PICASSO, ÉLUARD, MATT - Lot 37
PRIMITIVE ART — ARTISTS’ COLLECTIONS — PICASSO, ÉLUARD, MATTA, ARMAN, CÉSAR… [MUSÉE DE L'HOMME]. — Primitive Art in Artists’ Studios. Paris, Society of Friends of the Musée de l’Homme, 1967. Quarto, 26 cm, unpaginated [approx. 180 pp.], softcover with publisher’s illustrations; extensive black-and-white illustrations, including 158 works described and reproduced. Catalog compiled by Sylvie Joubert, with prefaces by Gaëtan Picon and Jean Laude. First edition of the catalog for the major exhibition held at the Musée de l’Homme in 1967, devoted to the so-called “primitive” arts then held in the personal collections and studios of modern artists. This catalog is particularly interesting due to the provenance of the exhibited pieces: the African, Oceanic, and pre-Columbian works come notably from the collections of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Max Ernst, Henri Matisse, Paul Éluard, Alberto Giacometti, Henry Moore, André Masson, Roberto Matta, Hans Hartung, Vieira da Silva, Pierre Soulages, César, Arman, and others. The book thus serves as a valuable testament to the tangible presence of non-European art in the studios of the great 20th-century artists, beyond its mere aesthetic influence. The entries document each object, its geographic origin, its function, and, above all, the artist’s collection to which it belonged. Among the provenances listed in this copy are notably the Chavignier, César, Hajdu, Matta, Hartung, Deyrolle, and Dodeigne collections, as well as the former Paul Éluard collection. Some of the exhibited works have since entered public collections: the Picasso Museum, for example, documents a Tsogho mask from Picasso’s studio by specifically referencing this 1967 catalog. Numerous full-page photographic reproductions featuring masks, sculptures, ritual objects, and everyday objects from Africa, Oceania, and pre-Columbian America. A fine copy. The cover is slightly rubbed, with minor signs of wear on the top and corners; the interior is clean and well-preserved.
