JAPANESE ART - Lot 34
JAPANESE ART Japanese Art Through the Centuries. Illustrated preface by H.E. Tetsuro Furukaki, Japanese Ambassador to France. Introduction by Ichimatsu Tanaka, Director of the National Research Institute for Cultural Properties in Tokyo. Paris, Art et Style, 1958. Art et Style Collection, No. 46. Large quarto (32 cm), publisher’s illustrated cardboard binding, cloth-covered spine. [8] pp. of text and 31 pp. of plates, lavishly illustrated in black-and-white and color. First edition of this album published on the occasion of the major exhibition of Japanese art held in Paris in 1958 at the National Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition had a twofold aim: to trace the historical development of Japanese art and to bring together a representative collection of masterpieces that would showcase its diversity. This album serves as its editorial extension. A beautiful publication dedicated to the major forms of Japanese art throughout the centuries: Buddhist sculpture, religious painting, portraits, Noh theater masks, and decorative arts. The reproductions—including several full-page color illustrations—feature, in particular, works preserved in Japan’s National Treasures collection. The preface was written by Tetsuro Furukaki, then Japanese ambassador to France, and the introduction by art historian Ichimatsu Tanaka. The book is now held in several major Japanese institutions, notably the Tokyo National Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. Copy in its original illustrated cardboard binding. Cover is rubbed and slightly soiled, with small paper losses at the corners and edges; headbands and corners are worn. The inner hinge of the front cover is brittle and partially open, as shown in the photograph. Former price of “120 F” written in pencil on the half-title page. Interior is otherwise clean, and the plates are well-preserved.
