ARNAUD (Georges) — BISCHOF (Werner) — FRANK (Robert) — VERGE - Lot 32
ARNAUD (Georges) — BISCHOF (Werner) — FRANK (Robert) — VERGER (Pierre). Indiens pas morts. Paris, Robert Delpire, “Neuf” series, 1956. In-4 (approx. 28.5 × 23 cm), 165 pp. and 3 ff. of endpapers, 77 black-and-white photographs reproduced by heliogravure, publisher’s unbleached cloth binding, with original illustrated photographic dust jacket. FIRST EDITION AND FIRST PRINTING. The BnF confirms the 1956 Robert Delpire edition, and the Robert Frank Foundation lists the work among Frank’s earliest publications. An important book in the history of photography A remarkable photographic work devoted to the indigenous peoples of Latin America, bringing together images by three major photographers—Werner Bischof, Robert Frank, and Pierre Verger—accompanied by a text by Georges Arnaud, author of *The Wages of Fear*. The volume includes 77 heliogravures, divided among Werner Bischof (13), Robert Frank (14), and Pierre Verger (50). The book’s bibliophilic appeal is primarily linked to Robert Frank: *Indiens pas morts* is his first book in which he is credited as photographer/author, published two years before *The Americans*. His fourteen photographs were taken in Bolivia and Peru. The chronology published by the National Gallery of Art precisely dates Delpire’s publication to September 8, 1956. The project had initially been entrusted to Werner Bischof, but his accidental death in Peru in 1954 led the publisher to complete the volume using Robert Frank’s photographs and Pierre Verger’s archives. A fine copy, in very fresh condition inside, complete with its original photographic dust jacket, which is slightly rubbed at the edges and corners.
