[CLUNY]. — The Spirit of Cluny. Cluniac Texts. - Lot 12
[CLUNY]. — The Spirit of Cluny. Cluniac Texts. La Pierre-qui-Vire, Éditions Zodiaque, “Les Points Cardinaux” series, no. 7, 1963. Square quarto, 195-[3] pp., publisher’s binding in old rose-colored full cloth, large Christ monogram stamped on the front cover, title on the spine. The volume is very richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs, reproductions of manuscripts and ancient documents, and includes 4 color plates. A table of texts and plates appears at the end of the volume. The volume notably contains some 78 photographic plates. First edition, published in 1963 as part of the remarkable “Les Points Cardinaux” series by Éditions Zodiaque. A beautiful volume devoted to Cluniac spirituality and civilization, structured as a continuous sequence of medieval texts and images. The publisher notes that the book was “conceived as a whole,” which explains why the table of contents is placed at the end of the volume. The Cluniac texts highlight, in particular, the order’s leading figures, including Saint Odo, Saint Odilon, Saint Hugh, and Peter the Venerable, while the illustrations juxtapose architecture, sculpture, manuscripts, and remnants of the Cluniac world. Cluny’s spirituality placed liturgy and praise at the center, a dimension reflected in its architecture and iconography. This copy is missing its illustrated dust jacket and slipcase—complete copies are normally described as including these items. The binding is nevertheless well-preserved, with a few small marks and minor soiling from use; the interior is fresh. The original price of “150 F” is written in pencil on the first endpaper.
