VILLEMESSANT (Hippolyte Auguste de Launay de). - Lot 310
VILLEMESSANT (Hippolyte Auguste de Launay de). Born in Rouen, 1810–1879. French journalist, founder and editor-in-chief of *Le Figaro*. Autograph letter signed “H de Villemessant” to “My dear editor,” undated (Friday), 1 page, in-8 format, on Le Figaro letterhead, 5 Rue Rossini. A charming autograph letter from Hippolyte de Villemessant, written on the famous *Le Figaro* letterhead, a document of great interest for the history of the Parisian press. In this letter, written in a social and slightly ironic tone, Villemessant informs his correspondent of his intention to attend a theatrical performance: “My dear Director, I intend to honor your theater with my presence this evening.” He specifies that he will be accompanied: “I will be going with my wife” and requests with elegant nonchalance: “You would be most kind to provide me with a good box seat” This lively and witty phrasing perfectly captures the tone of social and cultural life in Paris during the Second Empire. Beautiful full-name signature: “H. de Villemessant” This document is of particular interest due to its letterhead from *Le Figaro*, the newspaper that Villemessant helped establish as one of the leading publications of the 19th century. In excellent condition.
