VERLAINE (Paul). Born in Metz (Moselle). 1844–1896. French writer and poet. Autograph letter signed “P. Verlaine” to the publisher Albert Savine. Paris, November 10, 1888. 1 p., small in-12 format. ...I have been so ill yesterday and today that it has been impossible for me to visit you, which I hope to do within two or three days at the latest, bringing along what is needed...In 1888, Verlaine wanted to change publishers. Huysmans and Bloy recommended the publisher Albert Savine (1859–1927) to him as a replacement for Léon Vanier. A contract was signed on September 15, 1888, with Savine for the publication of *Bonheur* and *Histoires comme ça*. Ultimately, having quickly fallen out with his new publisher over Cazals’ alleged collaboration on *Histoires comme ça*, Verlaine returned in shame to his loyal publisher Vanier, with whom he reconciled, thus bringing the “Savine episode” to a definitive close.
