SAND (George). Born in Paris. 1804–1876. Novelist, playwright, letter writer, and literary critic. Autograph letter signed “G. Sand” to Clément Renoux. No place. [Palaiseau], August 12, [18]64. 1 p., in-8. George Sand, in response to Clément Renoux, who would like her to intercede with the publisher Michel Lévy to have his manuscript published, states …Mr. Michel Lévy is not in Paris. As soon as I know he has returned, I will present your request to him, though without flatteringly assuming influence I do not possess. Never mind. You may count on me to do my best. Please allow me not to read the manuscript; it is quite impossible for me to do so at this time…George Sand had already recommended a novel by Renoux, *Homme très pauvre*, in 1860. Is this time the novel *Terrible*, which Sand mentions in a later letter to Noël Parfait, Lévy’s right-hand man? Clément Renoux had been recommended to G. Sand by Jules Favre in February 1860, and had even traveled to Palaiseau, where Sand was living, on July 6, 1864. At that time, George Sand was very worried about the health of her grandson Marc (known as Cocoton), whom illness would claim on July 21.
