ROUAULT (Georges). Born in Paris. 1871–1958. Painter, draftsman, and engraver. Autograph letter signed “G. Rouault” and “G R” to Mr. Etienne de Jouvencel. Paris, undated. 2 pages, in-12 square format. Address, stamps, and postmarks (slight tear in the lower left corner due to the letter being opened). Rouault is clearly recovering from health problems: ...I knew full well, in principle, and as soon as I returned, the horror… of being stuck, but I didn’t expect to be so worn down and battered… begins Rouault, for whom the only way to avoid postponing his meeting with his correspondent any longer is to set a date…one evening around 7 p.m.—let’s say Tuesday—a time when, on certain days, I breathe a little easier... And he adds in a P.S.: ...I’m tied down by fixed deadlines for work to be delivered; I’ve just handed in a series, not without difficulty, having been interrupted too often (...). Don’t forget to let me know about Quiberon—whether it’s a go or not—so I can make my arrangements… Etienne de Jouvencel was a patron who collected modern art. He became friends with Rouault, who went on to become his daughter’s godfather.
