FRENCH REVOLUTION — DIRECTORY MINISTRY OF WAR Certificate of Exemption from Military Service Year V of the Republic (1796–1797) Important official document, handwritten and partially printed on heavy paper, with the letterhead: “French Republic, one and indivisible” featuring a large cartouche bearing the coat of arms of the Republic and the motto: “Liberty—Equality.” The text certifies, by decree of the Executive Directory, the exemption from military service in the armed forces of Citizen Brigeon, residing in Provins, Rue de Troyes, in the department of Seine-et-Marne. The document is dated the 5th of Vendémiaire, Year V, and bears multiple endorsements, later handwritten notes, signatures, and administrative seals. The document features several wet seals and administrative seals, notably: - a stamp from the Ministry of War - stamps from the municipality of Provins - endorsements from the Executive Directory - successive annotations and registrations A particularly decorative document that vividly evokes military administration under the Directory.
