REGNAUD DE SAINT-JEAN D'ANGÉLY (Michel-Louis-Étienne). Saint-Fargeau, 1760–1819. French politician, lawyer, and journalist. A deputy of the Third Estate at the Estates-General of 1789 and a member of the “conciliators” faction, he played an active role in the early stages of the Revolution. Autograph letter signed “R. de St Jean d’Angely,” addressed to the Duke of Feltre. Paris, November 10 [undated]. Half a page, quarto, on laid paper with the “Pro Patria” watermark. Political letter. Regnaud informs Henri-Jacques-Guillaume Clarke, Count of Hunebourg, Duke of Feltre, that “an officer who is a friend of mine sent me a note that struck me as important,” of which he had a copy made to forward to him. This document sheds light on the information networks and exchanges among political figures during a turbulent period, at a time when Regnaud and his correspondent would later face persecution during the Revolution. An interesting insight into political networks at the end of the 18th century, enhanced by the quality of the paper bearing the “Pro Patria” patriotic watermark. A sought-after historical artifact with significant content.
