QUENEAU (Raymond). Born in Le Havre. 1903–1976. Earned a degree in philosophy (studied under Kojève). Joined the Surrealist movement in 1924. Published his first book, *Le Chiendent*, in 1933. He joined Éditions Gallimard in 1938. Letter from “Queneau” to “Mon Cher Pillaudin” [screenwriter Roger Pillaudin]. I gave the manuscript to Lemarchand right away; then I went to the Lot, and by the time I returned, your play had slipped out of my orbit. I regret that, but Lemarchand’s favorable opinion should reassure you. Besides, shouldn’t it be staged?… He hopes so… all in the peace and quiet of your Lauris… In the 1960s, Pillaudin undertook to adapt another of Queneau’s hits, *Loin de Rueil*, for the stage as a musical. It was performed at the T.N.P. (Théâtre National Populaire), with music by Maurice Jarre. It was probably around this time that the regular correspondence between the two men began; Pillaudin would propose his plays to Queneau for Gallimard, while Queneau attempted to bring Pillaudin’s theatrical adaptations of his books all the way to Broadway...
