PORTIER (Paul). Born in Bar-sur-Seine, 1866–1962. French zoologist and marine biologist. Autograph letter signed “P. Portier,” addressed to “My dear Franck.” Paris, September 20, 1954. 2 pages, in-8 format, on printed letterhead of the Oceanographic Institute (Albert I of Monaco Foundation). A lighthearted and witty scientific letter discussing, in a tone that is both serious and mischievously ironic, the effects of extreme heat on insects. Portier thanks his correspondent for thinking of him during a study trip to Greece, then elaborates on his own observation: “Yes, I have observed the phenomenon you mention. On a scorching hot day in Vence, I saw butterflies avoiding the sun and staying in shaded areas. The optimal temperature had been reached or exceeded for them. We must conclude that there are no butterflies in hell. That is a matter of course. Therefore, entomologists should not go there…” He adds, with humor, in a postscript: “Besides, there must be very few people in hell…” A letter revealing the spirit of a great scholar, blending rigorous naturalist observation with wit, in the tradition of lively and personal scholarly correspondence.
