MASSON (André). Born in Balagny-sur-Thérain. 1896–1987. Painter, ceramicist, theater set designer. He joined the Surrealist movement in the 1920s. Autograph letter signed “A. Masson” to “My dear friend” (the philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty). No place, no date [May 5, 1957]. Enclosed stamped envelope. ...The day before yesterday, I seem to recall feeling quite flustered as I spoke to you about irony and the distance it creates between the artist and his work... I now remember an aphorism I once attempted: When play mingles with knowledge, fulfillment is attained... That isn’t quite the question, but it points in that direction a bit. In other words: the greatest of the Wise is also a child... But now it’s getting murky again!...
