MARJOLIN (Jean-Nicolas). Born in Ray-sur-Saône, 1780—died in Paris, 1850. French surgeon. Professor at the Paris Faculty of Medicine, member of the Academy of Medicine. His name is associated with Marjolin’s ulcer. Autograph note signed “Marjolin.” Paris, March 16, 1821. Three-quarters of a page, in-4 format. An interesting professional document detailing the fees charged by Marjolin for the care provided to a high-ranking patient, the Viscount de Vergennes. The physician meticulously specifies the number of visits made over a period spanning December 1819 to May 1820, distinguishing between several phases of the illness, for a total of one hundred seventy-five consultations, corresponding to fees of nine hundred seventy-five francs. A precise and rare account of medical practice and the pricing of care during the Restoration, illustrating both the work of a leading surgeon and the economic realities of medicine in the early 19th century.
