LA FAYETTE (Marie-Madeleine Pioche de la Vergne, Countess of). Born in Paris. 1634–1693. Woman of letters, author of *La Princesse de Clèves*. B.A.S. “De la Vergne.” No place, no date [October 6, 1685]. 1 page, in-4. Madame de La Fayette has received from Monsieur de Montolon …the sum of three hundred sixty-five livres for one year’s worth of the annuity he owes me, due on the day of last July, for which I release him and all others on this 6th of August, 1645…A towering figure in 17th-century literature alongside the letter-writer Madame de Sévigné (a close friend) and the novelist Mademoiselle de Scudéry (author of *Le Grand Cyrus*), she invented the modern novel.
