GERMAIN (Abel-Anastase). Coutances, 1833–1897 French prelate, Bishop of Coutances, educated at the Bayeux seminary, a renowned orator known for the elegance and vigor of his eloquence. Autograph letter signed “A. Germain” to “Monsieur le Curé” Bayeux, June 15, 1874 2½ pages, in-8 format, on letterhead reading “Diocese of Bayeux – Cathedral Parish.” A detailed and nuanced letter in which Father Germain delicately expresses his regret at being unable to fulfill a commitment. While thanking his correspondent with marked sensitivity—“your letter finds me… grateful and touched”—he refers to the constraints of his ministry, between liturgical obligations and accumulated fatigue: “the prospect of another anniversary at La Délivrande… and the need to take… a few days of rest, which I need today more than ever.” The tone, both sincere and conciliatory, reflects a deep attachment to their friendship: he hopes that this refusal, “which weighs heavily on [his] affection,” will not diminish its sincerity.
