DACIER (Bon-Joseph). Born in Valognes in 1742—died in 1833. Man of letters, permanent secretary of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, member of the Académie française. Autograph letter signed “Dacier,” addressed to the Commissioner of the Executive Directory attached to the administration of the canton of Louvres. Louvres, 1 Germinal Year V [March 21, 1797]. 1 page, small folio. An interesting administrative letter from the Directoire period, written in the republican style (“Citizen”), concerning the dissemination of official instructions. In it, Dacier acknowledges receipt of twelve copies of an instruction from the Legislative Body concerning the conduct of primary assemblies, noting that he immediately distributed them “in accordance with your intentions.” He further states that he will ensure their return to the administration’s secretariat after use. This document attests to the role of men of letters in the revolutionary administration, as they participated in the circulation of official texts and their implementation at the local level.
