COQUEREAU (Abbé Félix). Prelate and orator. Chaplain of the Belle Poule in 1840 during the return of Napoleon’s ashes; canon of Saint-Denis; appointed chaplain of La Flotte in 1850. Autograph letter signed “F. Coquereau,” canon of Saint-Denis, addressed to a general. No place or date. 1¼ pages, in-8 format. An interesting letter in which Abbé Coquereau, a clergyman with close ties to military and maritime circles, seeks his correspondent’s support on behalf of a former sailor who had served under his command aboard the Belle Poule. In a direct and compassionate tone, he describes the man’s difficult situation and appeals to the general for protection: “If you could do something for him… he is currently in a difficult position and is in great need of protection or assistance…” This document illustrates the networks of mutual aid among former civil servants, linking ecclesiastical and military circles, and recalls the prestige associated with the Belle Poule expedition during the return of Napoleon’s ashes.
