BERGSON (Henri). Born in Paris. 1859–1941. Awarded the agrégation in philosophy in 1881 (a student of Ravaisson). Professor at the École Normale Supérieure, then at the Collège de France. One of the most famous French philosophers of the first half of the 20th century. His first two works, published before 1900—*An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness* (1889) and *Matter and Memory* (1896)—were enough to make him famous. Autograph letter signed “H. Bergson” to André Chaumeix. No place [Paris], April 19, 1923. 1½ pages, in-8 format, with envelope attached. Bergson wishes to publish an article in the Revue [the Revue de Paris, edited by Chaumeix] …My paper may therefore very well not appear in the Revue until the 15th. However, if the Minister intends to bring the matter before Parliament immediately, now that the Superior Council has given its opinion, it might be in our best interest to publish this work as early as May 1. But I doubt there is such a rush. I would be happy to take a quick look at the proof. I won’t keep it for more than an hour…,” he promises.
